It lays out the grooves and fills in an excellent sequence from simple to intermediate, to advanced level material. It'll get you jump started on some standard beats and fills. The DVD is helpful for the different views and listening to how the beat is supposed to sound.

The book progresses to fast, and does not allow a more gradual transition through pattern playing exercises. The books are well written, and the accompanying CDs (which can be ordered separately) contain clearly-recorded examples of every chart in the book. You MUST have these books and CDs if you are serious about learning the Drumset.

There is a book before this one that focuses on drumming concepts that is very good too. It has about all the essentials of drumming crammed into 46 pages. It has cool pictures that students like and touches the basics of rock, jazz, and blues. It's a great introduction to chart reading and playing with a band. The added dvd has helped tremendously, as it shows how to play each song properly.

It is great book for young students, colorful illustrations, nice play along, and sound examples. The book is great and the instructions clear. It is good book for beginners who already have some experience, and some talent as well.
