The robert gillespie 1 essential violin book's material feels more premium than its price would suggest. This series emphasizes reading music, not relying on tabs. It includes essential elements interactive (eei), the ultimate online music education resource. It is very good book for grasping the basics, nothing beats face to face with an instructor but this book helps you get used to bow holding and finger positions. It comes with this method you can hear what the notes are supposed to sound like and learn the correct timing of the tune. The exercises and songs you learn on one string are the same for all the strings.

The book is very helpful as it shows at each stage of progression the proper techniques to hold the violin, the proper placement of the fingers, and other good illustrations. The CD that comes with this book gives you your own personal backup band. It is easy to fall into playing from memory rather than by actually learning the notes on the fingerboard.

Why We Like This:
  • Helps a lot and you really start to learn how to train your ear
  • Great music materials, lots of helpful hints
  • Essential elements for violin (and for other string instruments) are extremely useful
  • Easy to read and great teaching material

The songs in this book are great and fun to play and start off pretty easy for beginners. It starts with the easiest folk songs possible, and goes to master pieces, teaching you songs to learn that involve slightly new techniques, and it helps you to build your experience level up too. It’s good but it’s written in so many languages that you can only read 1/3 of the book.

The two books together work wonderfully for new students. It has different string versions of each song. The simple review is, yes, this book develops beginner techniques well and you can be playing pieces within two-weeks. It will be very helpful if you practice intonation or making a clear and consistent sound before trying the songs. It's more cluttered looking with the extra text which makes it a little harder to read the notes than the old version, but it does give the new student useful info. The book comes with a CD to help you hear how the songs should be played and that you can play along to.

Why We Like This:
  • Great way to start learning violin
  • Good investment for long term
