The inner edge of the derailleur hits the center chain ring, preventing the derailleur from traveling far enough to center on the large chain ring. They have a double and triple chainring version. It has positions between the numbers and on either side of the numbers. They're narrow in the vertical axis, meaning it takes fine adjustment in that axis to keep them from making contact.

The movement distance is adjustable via tiny set screws. It would barely reach the large chainring with the adjustment screw backed all the way off and the cable extremely tight. This item is a down pull and a clamp on with two extra shims for smaller diameter seat tubes. It wraps around the seat tube. The clamp has to match the tube diameter, but the derailleur comes with shims for common sizes.

This is a clamp mount, so it mounts on the vertical tube at the front sprockets/crank. The cable to operate it must pull down towards the bottom bracket.
