Alesis has been making great machine for years, thanks to a combination of clever design and appropriate materials. These drum machines aren't very user friendly for anything other than changing volume, tempo, and a/b switch or pre-loaded rhythms. Not only does it have lots of built-in patterns, it provides the ability to program and record more beats and drum sets. It features and velocity-sensitive pad buttons. It is made in a two button configuration to reduce cord clutter.

It has excellent drum sounds, plenty of cool drum patterns, and many usable drum kits. The volume knob works just on the drum going to headphones, so you can control the instrument outboard so the volume is really like a mix control. The pads that give you the drums also give you the notes for the bass for you to program that. It is pretty easy to use and has the added extra of being controlled by a foot pedal or two so you can switch between an a and b version of a beat and an a/b version of the fills at the end of each verse.
