The robert s ridgely a guide to the bird of costa rica should be able to handle its purpose and duties with ease. The new panama "field" guide (which is a fine book) is not much smaller or lighter than Ridgely/Gwynne. It is a hefty book and more suited to someone who is going to spend serious bird watching time in these areas. Even if you leave it at home or back in your room, if you are interested in more than just ID'ing the birds you will greatly benefit from its wealth of additional information.
The plates are very good, more than adequate. It is smaller and lighter than many bird guides available for latin american countries. This makes it hard to do the tried and true method of scanning plates to help you quickly identify the bird you just saw. The text in this book is excellent, with good descriptions of the various species and nice writeups of behavioral habits. It is not easy to carry when you are travelling light and trying to avoid excess baggage fees.
