Not everyone likes to purchase model for their daily usage, but the educational insights a model of our solar system would be an anomoly. The movement of the planets and the projection features are both quite cool and budding astronomers should find everything mostly to their liking. One of the other fun features of this solar system is the constellation projection. The top half of the Sun sphere can be removed and replaced with one that reveals the constellations if placed in a dark room. There’s one setting to stand still and light up and another to rotate. The top of the sun comes off to attach the constellation map. It will shutoff automatically, so you don’t need to worry about burning out the light too quickly.
It is good for learning and fun, and a nice gift idea for youngsters.

For a low asking price, thames kosmos a model of our solar system has managed to overwhelm their customers by packing as many features as they could. This stem experiment kit allows your child to build their own solar system. The model uses a wind-up gearbox and various other gears to spin the planets at varying rates. The graphics for the planets are vinyl and pre cut but take care of pealing as you can see them ripping if you're not carful. It works well enough and should last if you're careful not to overwind it.
It's VERY lightweight and wobbles, plus the sticks droop a bit. The fun factor of assembly drops considerably each time you have to redo it. The planets are like vinyl stickers (not at all sticky but do stick to surfaces like plastic and glass) so you can reposition them easily if you mess up the first time.
Why We Like This:
Very complex and time consuming and has sharp edges
A kit that allows kids to build their own rotating solar system
