Raising and lowering the bikes is reasonably easy, and they stay solidly in place without fear of them falling. It makes it easy to load or remove things on top of your car. The design of the rack leaves around 9 inches of space between the top of the bike and the ceiling or ceiling joist where the rack is installed. It is pretty easy for the rope to slip through the pulley system.
