Best Overall: ART Nice Pre amp

ART Nice Pre amp
Buy on Amazon

The art nice pre amp's high-end materials makes sure that it ages well with use. This device is a low-level device that processes microphone signals. It's designed for musical instruments and has only one channel. The ASUS Xonar STX PCIe card has combo Line/Microphone inputs, and when the Microphone line is selected, a relay switches/routes the input source through a cheaper electret 5v phantom powered (CMI9780) chip. It does have input and output level knobs, vu meters and a couple of other features.

This is a great tool for making your mic “funny” turning gain all the way up peaking the mic making your words very inaudible. It gives you a lot of headroom. The ART has analog in/out both xlr/ts(1/4") format. It has a metal case so it should be durable and last quite a while.

Why We Like This:
  • Great product for those who requires amplify a dynamic mic
  • Perfect to use at home for recording music
  • Very powerful tune saturator tool for home recording, especially for bass and vocals

Best For Ribbon Mic: ART hybrid Design

The features department is where art hybrid design truly manages to shine. It is the latest in a long line of tube preamps. Like any good pre-amp, it has virtually no sound of its own, but lets the sound of the source come through cleanly. It comes with up to 70db of clean musical gain and high output signal drive capability so the cold digital world will melt with your mixes. The high pass filter really does very little and the limiter is weak.

The casing is solid as a rock and the quality of sound you can achieve with this are great. It is great, simple to use preamp. The gain and output level are adjustable, there's a switchable low-pass filter to cut out rumble and wind noises from the mic, phantom power for condenser mics is available, and there's a crude limiter available if you must have one. It can be used as a unbalanced 1/4in input also.

Why We Like This:
  • Very clean, fair amount of gain
  • Truly a nice pre-amp and boosts signals quietly and efficicientlly
  • Excellent with condensor mic and amp for small live show

The art vocal preamp's superior materials makes sure that it ages well with use. It's great for a dynamic preacher where distortion can be an issue. The new ultra low noise discrete microphone preamp front end has an extremely flat and wide frequency response and handles a wide range of input signal levels with a minimum of coloration. The level knobs are "dented" and stop at determined spots as you turn them, a nice feature for keeping track of your settings.

This preamp gives a nice juicy tube sound which fattens up vocals really well. It comes with it's compressor, so signals won't overload but keep a steady output so a better recordable signal is achieved. There's a little background hum and hiss at higher gain levels, especially if you are using the compressor aggressively, but this is to be expected and is in no way objectionable. The compressor is a must for any broadcaster.

Why We Like This:
  • 40 output, and have a very clean sound
  • Adds old school warmth to digital home recording
  • Certainly is very useful for di electric guitar
  • Tons of gain, nice warmth once you start pushing the tube, and easy-to-use

Best For electric Guitar: ART Great Pre amp

If you often find yourself scrambling for appropriate and satisfactory preamp, this product is your end point. This unit is designed for microphone preampfification. It is very easy to hear which is which, as the PRO MPA II is significantly quieter. It comes with a couple Chinese tubes. It is designed to deliver years of reliable operation in the studio, production facility, or on the road for live sound reinforcement. The Mid Side recording is very powerful and fun to use and your signal will always be in phase.

There is a 48V option on the art pro MPA ll which will power a condenser mic. It is much quieter at the same level of gain. The controls are intuitive and the sound is excellent. It's a great way to dial tone in without causing phase issues.

Why We Like This:
  • Great for the small studio on a budget
  • Buzzing or noise in general, sounds great with replacement tubes
  • Distortion and runs extremely clean until it reaches a point of saturated clipping
  • Common uses include tracking with instruments

Best With compression: ART Mic Preamp

ART Mic Preamp

The art mic preamp is satisfactory and appropriate and fits well with your daily usage. It is an affordable two channel model. It provides level monitoring with two analog meters as well as two newly added input monitoring led meters. It has special circuitry that phase-shifts the program based on frequency to align the bass with the other frequencies (to correct delays introduced during the recording process) for stronger, more balanced bass. It does a good job of warming the tone of a mic. It will sound on drum overheads and will experiment with this later. It is great with a little eq and compression afterward. It is manufactured to the highest standards to provide years of quiet, reliable performance.

Why We Like This:
  • Clean and really adds juice to vocals
  • Great value, good flexibility, quiet, as "clean" as you want
  • One of the new comers and featured product

Best With ADAT: ART Great Preamp

If you are looking for a reliable preamp for your daily usage, you cannot go wrong with this pick. Even the stock tubes sound decent enough on vocals, but where this excels is as a bass preamp. The MPA-II is great with instrument inputs, even with high-gain digital effects. It comes in a standard 2 unit space rack-mountable steel chassis, with cnc routed black anodized aluminum face panel. Because of the full signal passing the tube, it truly flavors the signal with that good tube warmth everyone likes.

This unit has all the controls needed to dial in the right amount of tube drive (or none at all) and send a clean digital signal out to the next component at any sample rate. It is also a push button for, and two wordclock jacks, allowing loop-through. The preamp is also flexible enough to handle more difficult sources like ribbon mics, thanks to the adjustable input impedance. It is a definite upgrade, and adds nice warmth and tube color. If you trim the inputs carefully, the MPA-II is also very graceful at handling overloads, sending the tubes into overdrive rather than giving you a nasty hard clipping sound.

Why We Like This:
  • You can really dial in and get alot out of your mics
  • Variable input impedance for flexible microphone voicing
  • One of the new comers and featured product

Best With XLR Output: ART Pre amp

ART Pre amp

The art pre amp might be a relatively new release, but it's still nothing short of impressive this year. The ART Pro-Channel Microphone Preamp/Compressor/EQ works extremely well in this challenging situation. This is a mic pre-amp and DI box with a compressor and EQ section. The instructions are well organized and clear. You can plug this straight into your interface, and it has a decent tube preamp built in. The compressor is pretty transparent, but if you use it right and not overdo it, it will help much more than just an interface to bring out clarity and punch to your vocals.

The difference between both is that the ART Pro ChannelII has an equalization stage (semi-parametric EQ) that will be very useful for you if you want to sculpt your voice tone. The EQ is basic but provides immediately better recordings and saves time on mixing and mastering. There is a bypass switch for Compression module and also EQ so those stages can be skipped if there is no need.

Why We Like This:
  • High z input designs for guitar and bass
  • Wide leaders in tube dynamics signal
  • Excellent quality sound, quiet, 1/4" mono jacks, xlr plug, for microphone, musical instruments
  • You can play with the frequencies easily
