The edelrid auto block belay device should be able to handle its purpose and duties with ease. It's magnificently light and flat. It works with one rope and it is heavy. It's light weight and versatile but has the auto-lock feature. The force of the rope will overpower your thumb easily on this device, and you'll be caught quickly and safely. It does slip somewhat in a hard fall, enough to soften things up but not enough that it fails to arrest the fall entirely on its own. It's great for catching lead falls. It gets really hot if you feed the rope too quickly through it, like when you rappel.
It is not a fool proof replacement to proper belaying/rappelling/rescue technique.
Why We Like This:
Super lightweight, easy to use, and covers all the bases
Very safe if you stay within a certain rope size range
Works just like an atc with a lot of added features
