It does provide a cushion but it's never soft enough when riding but it is better than without. It'll work best in concert with a padded wrap and/or padded gloves. The inserts are easy to install.

They are nice and tacky to hold them in place while you wrap your bars but by no means are they permanent, you can re-position if necessary and under the wrap give a really nice soft bar. It can be used on a long trip yet. If you're looking for a reasonably priced gel pad to help take the pressure off your hands during rides, this would be a good investment.
