Best Overall: Joyo Blue Amp Head

The joyo blue amp head is long-lasting, rigid and fits well with your daily purpose like a dream. This Meteor is great for practice. It's an extremely impressive lunchbox amp. The fx loop enables you to put your time based effects (or phasers, flangers and choruses) behind the drive section and keep the effects sharp and not prevent them from being too muddy. It also has no "break up."

It has amazing tone and gets surprisingly loud. The clean channel is surprisingly good, and works great for pedals. It is easy to use with only a few dials. This is a great little amp warm and full of tube tone.

Why We Like This:
  • Great mini tube amp for bedroom/practice
  • Mainly for playing along with a song that is on your phone or ipod
  • Sweet harmonic analog driven fuzz through a 12ax7 tube,is pure heaven
  • Labeling and manual are simple and straightforward, connections are solid, bluetooth works well

Best For people: Orange Blue Amp Head

The orange blue amp head's material feels more premium than its price would suggest. It is truly amazing how an amp this tiny can produce such amazing sound. It can go from clean to pretty dirty but if you really want to get nasty you will need a nice hot humbucker and a distortion pedal. It is perfect if you want some grit at all times with the ability to dial in more. It can do really sweet, thick British cleans, fantastic Classic Rock crunch, and it can even reach into Classic Metal and Hair Metal territory.

It comes with a solid state power amp, aux in mp3 or cd. The tone knob gives you plenty of control and with a EQ pedal it gets even better. The Sound great on it's own and works fantastic with pedals,Great for home use or studio.

Why We Like This:
  • Sounds awesome cranked up on its own, and loud enough for rehearsals
  • Warm, alive, with tons of character
  • Very impressive and fun to play
  • Nice, light weight, powerful enough for small indoor venues

Best For Loud punchy: Orange Amps Blue Amp Head

Orange Amps Blue Amp Head

Not everyone likes to purchase head for their daily purpose, but the orange amps blue amp head would be an anomoly. This little guy is a standout with that thick Orange sound. The shape knob has a very useful sweep that gives great tones for recording. It is allows for a wide variety of tones from the amp and the gain control is responsive as well giving very clean clean sounds, very dirty dirty sounds and everything in between. Even though it is lightweight it is built sturdily, the construction is decidedly pedal like with a metal chassis, external power supply and quality switches and connectors.

This thing sounds good with headphones, a single 10" or 12" speaker, and a 4x12" cabinet as well. It holds its own against a lot of tube amps too considering its loud enough to gig with yet quiet enough to play in your apartment and still get a full distortion sound with the volume turned low. The amp is perfect for inspiring new ideas when practicing or sketching.

Why We Like This:
  • Sounds great at both ear destroying or bedroom playing levels
  • Great clean tone and nasty/tasty gain
  • Very simple to use with a surprising amount of versatility
  • Affordable, feature-packed practice or small gig kit in a bite sized lunch box package

Best For home recording: Peavey Blue Amp Head

Peavey Blue Amp Head

We know from years of feedback from readers, customers and amazon sellers, what most people want in a convenient and appropriate head. The peavey blue amp head is exactly that - it's a simple head that hits all the right notes. If you want a versatile amp with lots of usable tweaks/controls, that can get the dirtiest tones at low volumes this is the amp. This amp easily covers it all with excellent tones for every genre. It has a speaker defeat (mute) button that lets you play the amp without connecting to a speaker cab, for silent headphones practice or getting the tone out of your computer speakers/pa system etc. The footswitch has 2 buttons, the first switches from clean to lead and the 2nd is the crunch on the clean channel.

The addition of this overdrive pedal effectively gives you a fourth channel. It has a 8 or 16 ohm selector switch. The sound will improve greatly and the amp will be pretty quiet. It is for your jazz, blues, and classic rock, the rhythm channel is where you'll live.

Why We Like This:
  • Very versatile power settings and connection options
  • Has pre amp tubes and sounds fat with somewhar loose low end
  • Sounnds claner and tighter, has lots of gain and seperate eq for the channels

Best For practice: Marshall Blue Amp Head

Marshall Blue Amp Head
Buy on Amazon

The marshall blue amp head has killer features for the price point. This produces a distinctive, old school crunch that comes from power tube distortion more than preamp tube gain. It keeps your guitar's character, and your picking detail even cranked. It tames the treble, gives a little more bottom end, and tightens things up just enough. There's preamp distortion and there's power amp distortion.

This is a great amp head, and has the classic plexi tone. There is not a ton of onboard gain in this amp. It’s far from perfect but it’s got warm shimmering cleans that are easily pushed into a sweet growl. The origin is intended to be a Marshall flavored pedal platform.

Why We Like This:
  • Mid setting is perfect for most anything
  • Very vintage sounding, the plexi tone at your disposal
  • All tube, very responsive, early marshall tone
  • Great for dirty blues and classic rock
