Robert Gillespie has been making great book for years, thanks to a combination of clever design and high-end materials. It's ideal for teaching today's beginning band and string students, both in the classroom and at home. It offers beginning students sound pedagogy and engaging music, all carefully paced to successfully start young players on their musical journey. It's the second in a series of teach-yourself books for string instruments that is well laid out and rather easy to understand. It shows the steps to read the note in all strings, and have some good ensemble pieces.

The end of the book has a long Spotlight part with several long pieces to play, all very nice. It makes it fun to play. It includes essential elements interactive (eei), the ultimate online music education resource. It is an adequate book for level.

The alfred music cello method book is capable of outshining several other book featured in this list in overall features in its price range. Suzuki is a great method to train the ear of budding musicians. It includes a nice variety of pieces (some are challenging) of short to medium length. This method does a very good job of introducing new techniques one at a time without focusing too strongly on the fact that you're learning a technique. It gets your ears used to the open string interval. It's also fun to have something to play along with, and to learn what it's supposed to sound like.

This is logically set up, with repetition suggested, clear instructions, and a good pace. The instruction given in the Suzuki program is so excellent, motivating, and inspiring, that the kids don't want to have a summer break from Suzuki. It is a great book to use with those beginner students.
