We are personally inclined towards paul henry classical guitar method book, it is not so pricy, but it overachieves its purpose and outstanding in important aspects. This book is great for giving a young person who has not been exposed to guitar tablature. It outlines the foundations of classical guitar playing perfectly from playing single notes, to playing notes in two and three parts. It does require considerably more focus than the more popular styles, but you'll be rewarded with the ability to play some of the most beautiful music ever written. It has a very nice song selection of familiar tunes which makes it easier to learn.
For the initial plunge, this book is definitely the best of the lot. It doesn't push too fast, but at a pace anyone can handle, especially with the tablature. It does require a lot of repetitive practice to ingrain crucial muscle memory, but the goal is worth it and HLCG helps you get there.

Next on the list, we've got yet another book that manages to win our hearts. It's the christopher parkening classical guitar method book and it's widely considered as book that has the most suitable features. This book is probably great if you're absolutely brand new to classical guitar playing and do not read music. Shearer approaches the subject in a very thorough, detailed, way that includes many exercises and versions of exercises that some may find tedious. It also shows you the proper positioning and posture that should be used while playing them, not childish melodies that would squash any normal student's desire to learn more.
This book is structured in such a way that it gradually teaches you how to play step by step, with every note, and every combination with complete finger control. It is well illustrated, both with photos and artwork (all black and white), showing the parts of the guitar, its construction, tuning techniques, how to sit and place the hands and fingers. There is good info on hand position, the way fingers should move, and exercises that are basic, designed to get your hand in shape to play. These are to show the student which finger to put on the string.
Why We Like This:
Adds a fluidity to playing other styles, whether playing rock, blues, or country
Excellent method among many excellent methods
Fantastic, easy to understand explanations and pictures of technique plus progressively harder pieces

Next on the list, we've got yet another book that manages to win our hearts. It's the will schmid classical guitar method book and it's widely considered as book that has the most suitable features. It mixes fun and function, and is an easy book to follow. It helps the students to READ music instead of just being "TAB taught" illiterate musicians. It is good for a beginner or refresh if you haven't played in awhile.
The Alfred book spends more time ready music notes on the staff and less time on chords. It can teach on a more basic level. It is the best all-around method available. It is good for an intermediate guitar player.
Why We Like This:
Easy to use and learn book
Nice combination of single notes and slow chord introduction that helps you really learn

We would, of course, be remiss if we didn't mention bradford werner classical guitar method book for regular usage. Bradford's classical guitar method is solid, and puts classical guitar beginners on the right path. Even if you already have a teacher, this book helps support your learning, best practice methods, etc. It is a grade 1 level book with a nice variety of pieces. If you often find yourself scrambling for appropriate and satisfactory book, scott tennant classical guitar method book should be your first option for buying. This method does work WELL for the totally rank beginner like myself. There are a few exercises in this method that have you walking up and down the fretboard in a pedantic way, but these are brief and the material focuses on the "musical" pieces, which is much more fun. You could play all the exercises in this book with a cruddy, twangy tone to your notes and you'd never know it if you didn't have the CD or DVD to measure against.
This is more useful than using static photos or hand sketches you traditionally find in guitar books. The book IS lightweight enough to put on a music stand, but if it were spiral bound it would be sooo much easier. The book will not give too much detail on fretboard layout, scales and an encyclopedia of chords.
Why We Like This:
Good basic technique book with adequate exercises
Clear, effective and to the point
You will learn sight reading, counting, rythm, and musical notation
Include some memorable tunes and also provides are well suited to that purpose
