Best overall: Radial Engineering Passive Direct Box

Radial Engineering has been making great box for years, thanks to a combination of clever design and high-end materials. Mic's and line-level devices (like keyboards & CD players) have low impedance. This unit produces a clean signal, is easy to use, and is just as rugged as everything else they make. It takes a standard 14" mono cable male jack (think guitar or microphone cable) as input and converts it to a balanced XLR (male) pronged output. It cleanly and accurately represents the input given to it for live and studio settings.

It is good for longer runs from an instrument to the sound board as the 1/4" is only good for shorter runs. This preserves the sound quality very well when running with 300ft of cable. If you do a lot of live work, these are really handy.

Why We Like This:
  • Brilliant di that produces pure sound
  • Great and simple design, built like a tank, and lasts and lasts
  • Lot of satisfied buyers

Best For computer: Fishman tone control

The fishman tone control is specially designed for your daily usage and has all useful features. You can drive your guitar a lot harder now without breaking up into shrill and strident unnatural tones that only get covered up because the rest of the band helps cover up the horrid sounds. This preamp tool is great for getting your acoustic-electric dialed in for gigs, especially when the foh/sound person isn't the greatest. It features like an adjustable volume boost and a balanced xlr d.i. The Platinum Stage will fatten up your UST or SBT tones but does not have the Aura images or the level of stage control the Aura has.

The tuner is also great, very easy to read while standing above it. It comes with pre/post eq setting and auto ground lift. It is great for shaping your tone for a pa or monitor or for recording. The tuner is very good and the boost button is very optimizable.

Why We Like This:
  • Notch filters to help fight pesky feedback
  • Works great mandolin with simple piezoelectric pickup
  • Sounds great, versatile unit with compression and a wide range of tone options
  • Speed circuitry for the highest fidelity and low distortion

Best For higher Output instruments: Radial Engineering DI Box For piezo pickup

Not everyone likes to purchase box for their regular usage, but the radial engineering di box for piezo pickup would be an anomoly. The Pro48 is a pared down version of the J48 that features the same audio signal path but with less features. It is designed for higher output instruments. It provides protective zones around the switches and connectors. It is packaged in a smaller case and it has less colors and printing screens on it. It also is great when the bass pickups are non active (no battery in the bass) as you can easily boost up or down the signal input.

This is a fantastic active DI with ample headroom and a creative and effective ground lift. It allows for less distortion while yielding a smooth, linear response extending from 20hz to well above 100khz resulting in natural, uncolored signal transfer.

Why We Like This:
  • Solidly built and very clean and clear sound
  • You’ll get crackling and popping with an intermittent phantom power connection
  • Uses phantom power from the mixer
  • Radial di boxes are great, really good quality and built like tanks

Best With EQ: LR Baggs DI Box For piezo pickup

We would, of course, be remiss if we didn't mention lr baggs di box for piezo pickup for daily purpose. These guitars are typically hard to get a good balanced sound with just a piezo, but the K&K with the Venue produces a great tone at all volumes. Plus the boost for solos is awesome. It has eq like the para, but they have slightly differenct frequency points in the bass, presence, and treble.

The Venue has an onboard tuner, a boost button and effect that sends and teturns. It allows a lot of variation in sounds. It comes with its all discrete signal path, hi graded semiconductors and exclusive use of audiophile grade film capacitors, the venue di is on par with the world's elite preamps and provides a studio quality sound for the stage. The controls are really nice, responsive and easy to use.

Why We Like This:
  • Feels solid, plenty of options and tone shaping features
  • Good preamp with some useable tone slider controls for acoustic guitars with pickup
  • Lots of tone control options, and a great tuner

Best With mute Switch: Fishman DI Box For piezo pickup

We would, of course, be remiss if we didn't mention fishman di box for piezo pickup for regular usage. Being a 1 guitar band the booster is great when switching from a strum to a picking style. This is a sharp looking pedal, and fits nicely on a Pedal Train Mini alongside a tuner. It features automatic ground-lifting and selectable pre/post eq settings. It provides superior tone control for any acoustic instrument. The beauty of this pedal is the ability to have separate outputs for dry (original) and wet signal.

The midrange eq control on this unit does a fairly good job at dialing back a piezo pickup quack. It is built to be run over by a tank, and the housing for the tonedeq is plastic. Even though there are several bad points, the build quality and clean sound response keeps this unit current and wanted by musicians. If you’re serious about useable tone, this is the holy grail.

Why We Like This:
  • Construction, quality, look & feel are great
  • Effects are very nice, good tone and control with only two knobs each
  • Harmonics and fretnoises will be translated as a pitch
