It allows using older lnbs to be used with the hopper3 system. The Sling allows you to watch your shows and recordings from your DVR (Hopper) on your other devices besides your TV.
The hopper 3 requires a hybrid lnb & solo hub, and the hopper with sling uses a 1000.2 LNB & solo node. It cleans up and simpifies the screen. It has to be a fixed dish which sees all three satellites at one time. It allows users to record up to 16 shows at once, connect up to 6 joeys. If you want state of the art, its features, flexibility and kearning curve, hoppers are the way to go. This 2 terabyte HD dvr has 3 satellite tuners and provides full dvr functionality to the other tvs in your home through thin-client receivers called joeys (sold seperately) giving you a whole. The buttons are still all there, functions are very similar, not complicated.
The Joeys are small and allow you access to the main DVR at any time. It can only watch or record up to 3 different things at once. The hopper, like any new technology requires a bit of poking around. There are no lists and the individual icons for each show you record are almost as big as the palm of your hand and it takes forever to find anything.
