The hyperkin dreamcast memory unit gives the top-tier unit a run for their money by offering flagship specs at a much more affordable price. Some games even have mini games that can be stored onto it for portable play, like the well known Chao Adventure which acts as virtual pet memory, meaning you can't write. It lets you display secret data during head-to-head matches with other players. It saves your data and you can even play games on it.
It puts a screen in your controller, holds your files, acts as a clock, and holds games that you can take on the go. Unlike on a cartridge, there is no space to store any save data on a cd-rom (or gd-rom), the rom is read-only memory, meaning you can't write. It also has a very cool function for fames like Sonic. They can be used for mini games in various titles, and in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 you can trade characters if you link 2 of them together. It also doubles as a mini gameboy, only cheaper.

Not everyone likes to purchase unit for their regular usage, but the sega clear red controller would be an anomoly. Sega's Visual Memory Unit (VMU) for the Dreamcast is a memory card unit that inserts into the controller. It only has about 200 blocks, which is fine IF you only have a few games that you want to save your game. The translucent green is a nice touch, and getting it sealed in the box is a nice bonus. It works perfect as a memory card.
