If you are looking to buy a suitable device for your daily purpose, this product is the right option. This is an AWESOME belay device. It autobelays/autoblocks so you can briefly remove your brake hand. It makes climbing marginally safer. You can use it like a "normal" belay device, or with a thumb in the molded plastic, either way you can be sure your climber is safe. It is great for catching lead falls.

It is used to that movement, belaying a lead climber is as quick and smooth as anything. There is a little more wear on the carabiner that you use from the device locking down on it. It is not a fool proof replacement to proper belaying/rappelling/rescue technique.

Why We Like This:
  • Easy to use, light, excellent quality
  • Excellent for belaying lead climbers because feeding out line involves little resistance
  • Simpler, lighter, and cheaper than a grigri

Edelrid tubular Belay Device

Best part: edelrid tubular belay device costs comparatively low and it is available to ship in 24 hours. It takes a little practice to lower a climber smoothly. It's a bare bones, tubular belay device made out of actual steel. It is what the local climbing gym uses for classes and then requires for kids to use when they are belaying. It is designed to look and operate pretty much like any other tubular belay device, so for anyone familiar with the usual tubes, it's not much of an issue to transition over.

The steel makes the Jul2 feel so much more bomber. The simple auto-lock feature without the added complication of many auto-locking devices is an added safety feature that will help new lead belayer's. Its design is nearly beyond reproach.

Why We Like This:
  • Extra safety features not present with tubes
  • Simple and easy to use for climbing
  • Much smoother than the mega jul, assisted braking and very easy to lower
  • Catches very well, little jerky on the lowering

If you often find yourself confused about convenient and suitable device, this product is your solution. A grigri is great all around and so is any tubular style device (atc or similar) this device will get you through just about any situation. It's made possible by a smart hybrid construction of aluminum and steel. It is used to lead belay with a megajul and carry a tube style device (atc with guide mode) to belay from the top and rappel. It comes with a flick of the switch, it loads as you would expect a guide atc, reverso, pivot, etc. It doesn't auto block as well as a grigri, but feeds out slack much easier and can be used for double rope systems. This is nice when your buddy is hangdogging all the way up a project. It's versatile, lightweight, has a lot of different functionalities, and works flawlessly the more you get used to it. It's a great choice for double rope systems.

Why We Like This:
  • Easy to use in both modes
  • Cheaper and intuitive, great alternative of grigri
  • Easy repel, works well in guide mode
