The discharge can be rotated 360 degrees, however it comes off of the back of the toilet at roughly 45 degrees. It pulls in water (raw -sea or fresh, depending on how you plumb it) and with a flip of switch, pumps waste out of the toilet either to holding tank or wherever you designate. The base is just to hold the bowl.

Seriously, this is a high quality toilet and is relatively easy to install. It indeed is quite a toilet, but it is fairly noisy especially if one is accustomed to silent flushes. It comes with its heavy duty push-button switch as well as a 1 to 1.5-inch hose adapter for the discharge hose. It is a macerating head and it uses a smaller diameter waste hose. The toilet fits perfectly and hooked right up to the existing wires and hoses. The manual specifically forbids hooking this into a pressurized water system.

The Holding tank is separate, this is just a toilet with pump that sends waste to holding tank in the boat. The toilet is plumbed directly to a through hull fitting below the water line and it pumps seawater directly into the bowl for flushing.
