Next on the list, we've got yet another head that manages to win our hearts. It's the evans evan hydraulic black snare head and it's widely considered as one of the best convenient head you can buy. The revolutionary evans level 360 drum head technology is found in the proprietary collar design that extends the level playing surface of the drum head 360 degrees around the drum. Wider tuning options result in higher levels of responsivness and resonance, giving you the confidence to tune your drums high or low. These do have oil inside (in the blue and clear, you can see it), so you can't use the Kickport FX series in them. The attack on this head is incredible and with the thick 500 snare side, it just goes CRACK.
There's a surprising amount of versatility from center to edge too, you can go from metal cracks in the middle to stroke rolls near the rim that have a real jazzy sound if you have the right stick tips. This looks and sounds great.
Why We Like This:
Look awesome, sound great a soft warm feel
Surprisingly dynamic sound with snare disengaged and wound tightly
Really beefy sound with very little ringing or overtones

The evans hydraulic head is suitable and reliable and fits well with your daily purpose. It's definitely a good drum head to have in the studio for certain situations. It sounds thick, deep, and AMAZING. It is not too punchy or in your face, but also extremely full and solid and dominating. The double layer and the oil in between them, dampen the sound and allow for easy tuning. The black color also hides the tell-tale round patches of oil that show up in random areas between the two film layers which you can see prominently in the lighter colored versions of the hydraulic.
This technology automatically suppresses a lot of the natural overtones of the drum and gives the drum (especially a snare drum) a deep dark tone that doesn't sustain very long. It will be a dry sound no matter what you do so if you want something that rings a bit then this isn’t for you. It is great for important shows or recording.
Why We Like This:
Snappy and solid snare drum head
Giving it a deeper, richer sound without many overtones
