If you often find yourself scrambling for good primer, this should be your first option for buying. It is basically a sprayable plastic filler and it does a very nice job of sealing off wood grain, rough fiberglass, and very rough body work if you need it to. It can apply paint directly over this or apply additional primer like a urethane material. If the paper is too fine, it will clog easily, especially if you are not wet sanding. It will sink into 1/4' holes and runs, so you just have to sand down and Presto. It must have an epoxy or self etch under it. There are really nice measuring marks on the harder tubes to make mixing small quantities easy.

The evercoat polyester primer is capable of outshining several other products featured in this list in overall features for the price point. It's great for filling pits. It's basically a pre-mixed polyester resin with the thickening agent already added. It does NOT sand down as smooth as an automotive primer, and the paint you are using needs to be compatible with Polyester as opposed to Fiberglass resin. It comes with 4 tubes of activator so pouring out a quart and adding a tube is easy.
This stuff has an evil odor so good ventilation and respirator is mandatory. It is great for filling pits. It's great stuff to use if you have a lot of bare metal to cover. It's the same polyester base as most fillers so it's compatible.
