Best Overall: Carib Sea fine River Sand

Carib Sea fine River Sand

The carib sea fine river sand is the best feature-rich sand on the market today. It looks beautiful and very natural in the tank and the live stem plants go in easily. It's finer than gravel and bigger granules than sand. It can be used in a shrimp tank. It is ideal for most freshwater aquaria, including discus, tetras, angelfish, water turtles, rays, plants, cichlids and more. It’s small enough to hold the plants in, but not so small that it gets kicked up as easily as regular sand. The size of the grains makes rooting easier. This is a really nice substrate.

Why We Like This:
  • Grainier than sand, much smaller than gravel
  • Very nice and solid better than gravel for plants
  • One of the new comers and featured product

The carib sea clean sand is satisfactory and appropriate and fits well with your daily usage. There are no nutrients in sand for the plants to use. It's beautiful sand that is fine enough to clean the detritus from easily. It allows for plant features to root in. It is easily removed with a damp paper towel. It is a nice change from gravel. It helps eliminate deadly ammonia spikes. It is slightly finer and it hides algae very well. It is good sand for an aquarium or terrarium substrate. It will look like it's dry and moveable when the tank is full.

Why We Like This:
  • Small to medium grains that shine
  • Effective for pest (fungus gnat) control on plants
  • Crystal clear and easy to vacuum

Best For planted tanks: Estes fine River Sand

It is regular small grain aquarium sand. It is ideal sand for all marine and freshwater tanks. It slightly clouds the water and some of the samd floats until full wet. The sand is heavy enough to stay in place as long as the pump isn't pulling intake too hard. The sand is black and maintains it's blackness in the water, unlike some " black " sand that turns lighter when in the tank or even in a planter.

This sand is very fine and as a result requires more prep work before using in an existing aquarium. Rinse them well and they look very nice in a tank or even in a planter. They are able to reach sinking pellets easier too. It takes to clean to start a new aquarium or add to an existing one.

Why We Like This:
  • Easy to clean, looks sleek and fish love it
  • Enough to make you pull your hair out
  • Delivers what they promise

Best With corydoras: Stoney River White Sand

This sand works perfectly for the bottom of an axolotl tank. It stays in place and does not make the water dirty, the sand is also very soft and it’s giving the tank an amazing natural feature. It looks great after your prep and ready to go. It has that softness of a sand feel if that makes sense.

This is a coarse sand. It does not cloud the water and it has a great look. The sand is so much brighter.

Why We Like This:
  • Lots of floating pieces, and very dusty
  • One of the new comers and featured product

Best For beach theme: Stoney River fine River Sand

This is obviously a dry sand and you can use dry sand in a saltwater tank just as you can in a freshwater tank. It does take at least 3 inches of sand to hold down faux plants and other decor in a tank. It makes the shrimp tank look amazing.

This sand is heavy enough that it holds the air bubbles under it and every few seconds it randomly lets air burst through in different spots throughout the tank. The blue sand is reasonably priced for the amount of sand, the sand cleans as it should, and does not cause anything negative.

Why We Like This:
  • Safe for use in freshwater aquariums
  • Blue sand for freshwater and marine aquariums
  • Easy maintenance, good grain sand for an aquarium
  • Beautiful blue sand makes the shrimp tank look amazing
