The various artists jazz box's material feels more premium than its price would suggest. It is a tremendous decade for jazz music, an even 100 songs cannot begin to be comprehensive, but every cut here is essential. This 8-CD box chronicles the decade of what some call jazz's biggest decade, just before Elvis hip-checked jazz off the pop charts. The broad scope of musicians and styles makes this an essential part of anyone's jazz collection.

This package really sets the new standard for bargain box sets. A quick check of the sound quality on a few of the tracks indicated that it is excellent with no record noise like scrathes and such. The sound is just fine mostly. This is a terrific album if you really want to hear some great jazz.

If you need a kind of "starter kit" for someone interested in Jazz, this is the box set.

Why We Like This:
  • Excellente choice of various outstanding jazz artists
  • Very cool looking box, good quality cd covers and high definition sound
  • Delivers what they promise

John Coltrane Jazz box

John Coltrane Jazz box

The john coltrane jazz box is capable of outshining several other box featured in this list in overall features for the price point. For any jazz, Coltrane, vinyl enthusiasts, this is an incredible collection. The Stereo tracks are gorgeous in their late 50's/1960's style and hard left and hard right mixes. Not only does this sound incredible but it looks just as good. The paper, layout, and especially photos are gorgeous. The book is printed on photo-quality paper, the kind that you might get a photo poster on for framing.

Compared to the previously released CDs, on Coltrane 58 the horns have more presence and warmth, there’s more space between the instruments, piano & bass & drums sound more realistic. The music is sublime, the liner notes and photos all wonderful,BUT the packaging while attractive leaves a little to be desired. The sound quality is so improved, it's like hearing the music for the first time. This is a great thing in that you have a truly "you are there" feel to the recordings.

Why We Like This:
  • A high-class top-notch production from top to bottom
  • Perfect snapshot of a perfect era
  • Good investment for long term

The various artists jazz box is suitable and reliable and fits well with your daily purpose. When it is used to car explosions, high death counts, and vicious hip-hop, west coast jazz at first might sound like elevator music. It is like a slow blue that still moves all the time. It works at the levels of “background music”, good jazz to listen to, and “art music” that you have to pay attention to, without the levels interfering.

The sound quality for these very old recordings is absolutely amazing. It is rarely hot, although it can be intense as with Art Pepper. It has been engineered, under-engineered, or over-engineered. It makes for a great late night, lay in bed, listening experience. It is a well priced overview of west coast jazz and the sound quality is very good.

Why We Like This:
  • Metadata and album covers are fairly easy to find on all
  • Sound quality is generally good as well, great value for the money
  • Good investment for long term

Miles Davis Jazz box

Miles Davis Jazz box

Miles Davis has been making great box for years, thanks to a combination of clever design and appropriate materials. If you are a miles davis fan, and have yet to start a collection, this is a great way to get the majority of miles' output, with the exception of the prestige and warner brothers, early and last recordings. It's a thrill to hear the music and history together from someone who actually is there for many live performances. The mix still sounds quiet and muffled, like it is recorded from a styrofoam cup instead of microphones. The book contains all of the session info, with some words on the album's creation.

A lot of the recordings from this era are live & feature long, drawn out pieces of music with a lot of soloing, touches of Indian music, & are heavily guitar & drum driven. The music is just about as close to perfect as 71 discs' worth of one artist could be.

Why We Like This:
  • Incredible value, and for the disc-ophile, an advantage over the individual cds
  • Just so much fun to trawl through, finding hidden gems and revisiting past favorites
  • Good investment for long term
