If you often find yourself scrambling for convenient and suitable book, this product is your end point. It is not Madhur's most authentic book of indian cooking. The steamed shrimp dish with the mustard oil (which you have to buy in an indian spice shop) is maybe the best recipe so far, but all of them are excellent. There is an "Indian Pantry" section towards the back that is exactly what you need when first figuring out a new style of cooking. It includes each recipe helpful in figuring out what to serve with the dish, different techniques, or how to alter the spice levels. These are wonderful receipes with attainable ingredients.
There are so many unfamiliar spices and techniques. The recipes are easy and delicious. If you have a thing for indian cuisine and also are vigilant about health, nutrition and ease of preparation this book will serve you well. It is easy to follow, and the ingredient lists look authentic but not overwhelming. Why We Like This:
- Made cooking indian food so simple
- Good investment for long term

The features department is where madhur jaffrey interesting book truly manages to shine. Jaffrey is an elegant writer and effortlessly evokes what it is like to be a child of privilege growing up at the end of British rule in India. It is packed with all the joys and flavors of an extended family with liberal food descriptions and delightful flavors of multi ethnic indian cuisine. It is, indeed, the most ephemeral of fairy dishes, a frothy evanescence that disappears as soon it touches the tongue, a winter specialty requiring dew as an ingredient.
This upbeat and lively memoir gives the reader a sweeping view of life in a large extended family of India's privileged class. There are amusing tidbits such as "the art of getting thirty people into two cars" and the mischievous "Holi" day celebrations, and an indepth look at the intricacies of life in a large extended family, plus a sprinkling of family photos. You can practically taste sun warmed mangoes plucked from the tree, the barley-sugar candy that holds a hallowed place in the author's memory.
