The jamie jensen map of pacific west coast is capable of outshining several other map featured in this list in overall features for the price point. If you're planning a once in a lifetime trip on the PCH this is the book you have to have. The entries for places like the Monterey Aquarium, the Santa Cruz Pier, the Hearst Castle and many of the California state parks are complete enough to give you an overview and written in a friendly and helpful voice.
Each place has just a brief little entry but it's kind of perfect to read out loud in the car without droning on and on. The writing and the photography (though the photos are pretty tiny) are both extremely well done. If you want something light and fairly small that just hits the highlights, you'll prefer this book. It's a great little book that you can supplement with internet research if you desire.
While not necessarily a must for the vacation, it's definitely helpful, especially if you want a mix of both touristy and off-the-beaten path destinations. This is a great guide for a trip up or down the coast.
