Not everyone likes to purchase processor for their regular usage, but the dbx microphone preamp processor would be an anomoly. As a mic preamp it works great for dynamic mics such as the Shure SM27B which needs a lot of gain. It is made by dbx, mc-6 mini-comp, and that unit is fantastic, sounds great and is a very powerful tool. It is a full-featured channel strip processor that delivers a studio-quality microphone/instrument preamplifier and four processors that can be used independently or in any combination. It also boosts your mics to their fullest potential.
The DBDX 286s offer a full complement of metering and status leds to visually guide you to achieving the right sound. It is perfectly, the de-esser is okay, but can be easily overpowering. The extra controls on the strip save a lot of editing. This is the STAR of this unit's show, the gate works AWESOME and is worth 200 by itself.
Why We Like This:
Enhancer and de-esser, and compressor, and expander gate
Decent amount of gain, very clear/clean gain
Elimates a lot of background noise and boost vocals
Built robustly and the controls have a positive click like feel to them

Art has been making great processor for years, thanks to a combination of clever design and appropriate materials. It is great for a dynamic preacher where distortion can be an issue. This preamp gives a nice juicy tube sound which fattens up vocals really well. It also powers your condenser mic, so you might consider it in your live rig so that you can use a condenser. It will supply phantom power.
This unit has an unbalanced 1/4” output (so use TS, not TRS cables), and you certainly could use an XLR 1/4” adapter if you want to use the balanced output. It also has a very quiet circuit that doesn't induce noise, super impressed there as well. There's a little background hum and hiss at higher gain levels, especially if you are using the compressor aggressively, but this is to be expected and is in no way objectionable.
Why We Like This:
Plenty of gain and the compressor feature is worth the extra money
Sounds killer for guitar or vocals
Tons of gain, nice warmth once you start pushing the tube, and easy-to-use
