Miles and Trane can play with a lot of edge and this master balances that edge perfectly without dulling it. It is filled with more incredible tracks including the standards Green Dolphin Street and Love for Sale, plus an up-tempo version of So What that features a very long solo by Trane. This package is beautiful with many colour and B&W photos of Miles and the band, and printed commentary plus additional commentary on CDR.

The 5.1 and stereo mixes on the dvd side are only dolby digital pcm. The horns have a lot of presence without being strident. The modal structure is familiar to anyone with a background in Western culture, and the musicianship, although first-rate, isn't geared to impress, but to envelope.

This CD won't beat you over the head, but it is likely to worm its way into your subconsciousness in the most appealing way possible. The wind instruments are warm and with a wonderful timbre, but the most mindboggling is the dynamic drums and crystal clear cymbals. This is obviously a direct conversion from the original three-track master with out-of-phase info added for the surrounds, but the recording obviously acoustically isolated each player.

If you want nothing but the best desirable sound, then this product is the one you should definitely consider, as it manages to bring a lot to the table. Pushing the ease of the prior album to one side, this album gave its prime real estate to the rhythm section, and the greatest trophy to Tony Williams. It highlights this amazing group at the peak of their powers, and is as close to a perfect lp as this quintet made. The band is clearly restless on this lp, and that tension heightens the already powerful slate of numbers played, and also clearly foreshadows what "Miles in the Sky" and "Filles de Kilmanjaro" would offer.

The Riot" is a short, ominous, quasi-Latin Herbie Hancock tune which sounds fresher and sharper here than on Herbie's album "Speak Like A Child" even if this version isn't fully developed yet. Like "The Sorcerer", there's an odd density to these recordings that is not overly flattering to the sound, but the performances are jaw-dropping at times.

This song is cut down to a three minute stand, featuring even more of that claustrophobic, maddening piano but presented as a fighter built for speed. There is enough deviation from traditional bop, cool or modal jazz, but not tremendous or painful deviation.

The opening track "Frelon Brun" is the only track which resembles the hard-bop of the Miles Smiles and E.S.P. The theme is great and played with tremendous energy. The title track has a gorgeous, dreamy melody a la "Footprints" or "Masqualero.

The resulting sound is an intermediate hybrid between the acoustic jazz era a la Miles Smiles, and the future electronic fusion sound which was soon to be heard on In a Silent Way' and Bitches Brew. The theme is great and plays with tremendous energy.
