There are long stretches of barren groove and noodly solos that never seem to really get off the ground. This recording is a worthy companion to "In a Quiet Way" and "Bitches Brew. It provides as an extra melody line along with the guitar and bass which are utterly and viscerally piercing and must have taken a great deal of effort from both miles and producer teo macero to develop to the stage they reached.

The album contains just two tracks clocking in around 26 minutes each, but both tracks are very diverse and never get boring. It is actually a great bridge into jazz from heavier rock, better than any other electric miles which is often an acquired taste and on the abstract side. There is little harmonic change and the groove stays the same until about 12 minutes when a James Brown guitar vamp starts, very cool. This track is spectacular giving each of the musicians extensive room to jam while the rhythm section of Bill Cobham and Michael Henderson lay down the beat.

It is a stunning work in every way, and it's value is due largely to the almost otherworldly brilliance of john mclaughlin.
