Expanders are used to make quiet sounds even quieter by reducing the level of an audio signal that falls below a set threshold level. It is ideal for generating pro-sounding vox for a video project. It is designed to be used with one microphone (or instrument) source connected directly to it. It is a signal processing strip with compression, gating and maximizing features.
The build quality is good, the controls are postive and accurately labeled, and the options it offers make it very flexible. It allows you to make the voice sound very natural. If you are a podcaster or voice-over artist this device will instantly help you create better audio recordings.

For a low asking price, art great pre amp has managed to overwhelm their customers by packing as many features as they could. For someone without a big budget, this is a great way to be able to have decent quality tube preamps on a lot of drums. This unit is designed for microphone preampfification. It's clean and quiet, very transparent and the tube effect is very subtle (unlike some of the cheaper starved plate preamps out there) unless you push it very hard. It has phantom power and works great.
The crunch that happens once you drive the tube sounds beautiful with guitar, especially if you're amp modeling instead of going with the real deal. It's a switch on both channels that raise the voltage going through the tubes creating more saturation. These are pretty nice and sound good for acoustic guitar. It is much quieter at the same level of gain.
Why We Like This:
Buzzing or noise in general, sounds great with replacement tubes

The focusrite multi channel mic preamp is capable of outshining several other preamp featured in this list in overall features in its price range. Building on the features of the scarlett octopre, scarlett octopre dynamic brings you the ultimate scarlett expansion with eight scarlett mic preamps and analogue compression on every input channel providing a musical, soft-knee style of compression for more subtle control of your dynamics. It lets you control the dynamics of all your input signals with an easy-to-use single-knob analog compressor on every channel.
The Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic is an ADAT expansion device, which can be linked to any audio interface with corresponding ADAT ports. Eight analogue outputs can be sourced either directly from the mic preamps for live use, or via the adat inputs to give you eight more analogue output channels from your daw.
The preamps are very detailed and have good headroom.

If you often find yourself scrambling for convenient and suitable preamp, art multi channel mic preamp should be your first option for buying. This unit is the last exit before spending thousands on high-end stuff and does its job very well. It features a high quality a to d converter which offers digital connectivity on s/pdif, adat, or aes/ebu outputs. The preamp is also flexible enough to handle more difficult sources like ribbon mics, thanks to the adjustable input impedance.
The variable impedance feature and continuously variable low-pass are great for dialing in the exact tone from your mic and removing unwanted low-end junk. It is also a push button for, and two wordclock jacks, allowing loop-through. It is a definite upgrade, and adds nice warmth and tube color. The weight specification are especially important for people who will travel with this equipment on flight as there are weight restrictions.
