It's superlight, extra-small, waterproof to 1m, and the lithium batteries last a long time in an emergency kit. It's sturdily constructed while maintaining a light weight. The white light is "cooler" (closer to the blue end of the spectrum) and the beam has a shorter range, but a higher flood, than the previous models. It's also easier to distinguish color.

The light is very compact, and the ability to have a set of spare batteries that are very compact is a plus as well. The plastic slider is so large, it's more of a chore then it should be finagling this in and out of the case. It will get you back to your campsite.

The batteries in this one also last longer, and since they are AAA, the overall weight of batteries for a 30 day trip goes also down, which is great when you are backpacking.

The light beam on the Actik is much better for short to medium range lighting distances compared to the Black Diamond which seems better for a medium to longer distance. It holds a lot of time, two AAA batteries, and it is much more convenient than three AAA batteries (usually headlights) built with good materials.
