It has a built in metal screen, vent made of white plastic. It just has slits in the plastic allowing it to vent, but sure won't keep bugs out. The vents are slotted to prevent the "bees in the arctic" problem, no mesh though but just as good if not even better.

Not everyone likes to purchase vent for their regular usage, but the unknown rectangular gable vent would be an anomoly. The louver section of the plastic vent is supposed to "snap" into place at the corners. It still looks good, functions great, and good quality. The vents fit the existing rough opening with out any modifications. It comes with a plastic frame to anchor down, then the louvered vent snaps/attaches to. The flange is even with the outside, so the inside protrudes into the attic wall rough opening. It works with wood siding to add to that that fits flush in the opening.

It looks very similar to the front side except it has a screen on the inside.
