This book is beautiful and their method for baking sourdough is great. It gets the basics over with and then tells you how to bake bread in a simplified manner depending on what type of flour you want to use. It has beginner elements with steps clearly laid out and clearly photographed, so if someone is interested in starting a very dedicated new hobby, it could also work for that. The recipes use a nice variety of flours and gives even the experienced baker new formulas/recipes to follow.

The Artisan sourdough comes complete with cook’s notes and a troubleshooting section to help you avoid soggy bottoms, overbaking, and other common problems. They tell you to heat up the Dutch oven, leaving the dough in the fridge until the recommended time has elapsed, THEN pull the dough out, score it, pull the hot pot out of the oven, put the cold dough in the pot. A few minutes of using the "slap and fold" technique (just after the autolyse phase) helps a lot to develop your dough, but that's not mentioned here. This book is detailed with specific instructions and has great information to make and store your starter but doesn’t waste time on it.
