The donald stokes nice and informative birding field guide might be a relatively new release, but it's still nothing short of impressive this year. The Stokes is a nice guide with very clear and good-sized pictures that show different seasons, mature vs. immature, morphs, etc. It uses actual pictures of birds for really easy identification. It features that make this field guide extremely useful and user-friendly.
It's not as large and heavy as The Crossley ID Guide, making it somewhat more portable though because it's loaded with photos and it's heavy for its 8.5" x 5.5" size. The photos are both gorgeous and helpful and the text is thorough, including descriptions of seasonal plumage and appearance in flight.
To make it more portable, the Stokes have simply removed the very rare birds, and also the birds that don't appear in either half of the country. It will fit into most vest pockets.

We would, of course, be remiss if we didn't mention stoke field guide to bird for regular usage. The Stokes Guide is bigger than Peterson or Audobon, but the ease of use makes up for the disadvantage of a slighter bigger book. It provides a very brief description of each bird's calls. Combine these CD's with the larkwire phone app and you will be well on your way to birding by ear. It also includes an extra 4th CD which you can download and have the exact call of the bird (grouped) and learn their calls by words.
This book also frequently has a picture of not just the male but also the female birds along with immature young whose coloring is distinct from the adults. It provides a complete repetoire per bird. There is a quick, color-coded index for finding pages on the most common birds as well as color-marked sections on broad types of birds. If you are a birder, and like to know what birds are around, this product will confirm your identifications.
