It has a toothy surface to which the chalk pastel can adhere to, as opposed to a smooth surface like bristol or some of the watercolor paper surfaces. It does come with some gray sheets. The colors are great for the background of graphite drawings. The front is more textured, good for soft pastels. The size of the paper is great.

These gelatin-sized papers are 50 percent cotton, and resistant to fading. It is a light-fast paper that is colored at the pulp level. It has decent "tooth", with the downside being a pattern built in to the paper texture. The colors are a great bonus, and works as an underpainting.
