Diffusion or shoot-through umbrellas are designed with quality 1-stop diffusion fabric that softens and expands your light. It is made of better chromed metal and is easier to open and close. It provides nicer light than softboxes. It is useful for shoot through or bounce depending on your setup.

The westcott well made umbrella might be a relatively new release, but it's still nothing short of impressive this year, thanks to multiple price cuts and added new features over the past few iterations. This is an excellent modifier, well made, good materials, and THICK center pole. It collapses to a nice size and the black cover is quite useful for a sharper lighting effect. The elastic loops keep the metal tips of the black cover in place by providing just the right amount of tension from the inside. The pull out metal rod, which makes the umbrella easily fit into any bag.

The westcott great small umbrella's high-end materials makes sure that it ages well with use. It is a great small umbrella for photography. If you place your light-source towards the end of the shaft you have a 32" light which is plenty for most situations. It is great for soft fill light though, maybe not as a key light. The metal tips themselves actually pop off the ends of the umbrella arms. The interior is a satin silver/white that doesn't produce any color shifts like the metal frames tend to. The black cover is indeed removable.

The fiberglass frame should survive having a stand blow over in the wind without kinking like the metal frames tend to. It is for those times when you need a little more ooomph than the optical white shoot thru, the black backing allows a small strobe to effectively be efficient as an umbrella at close range.
